Rocket City Back Half — F30-34: Bates runs away with it at 7:13 pace

• Lennon Bates (33, Little Rock, AR) won the F30-34 age group in 1:34:38 — a 7:13/mi average — nearly six minutes clear of second place in a 46-woman field.
• Maven Pinkston backed up her runner-up finish with the 9th-fastest women's closing split (10K to Finish), holding off a late charge to secure 2nd in 1:40:36.
• Lauren McDonough was the biggest mover on the closing stretch, posting the 13th-fastest women's split from 10K to Finish to climb from 18th to 14th among women — and from 4th to 4th in the age group, edging Jaimie Carolan who faded from 8th to 13th among women over the same stretch.
• Nos. 19 and 20, Christina Zegler and Christina Sherer, crossed in the same clock time of 2:12:42 — the results order separates them, but it was as close as it gets.

Lennon Bates made the F30-34 race look straightforward, even if the conditions — 70°F, 76% humidity, and a 17 mph wind — were anything but. She held 6th among women from start to finish, never wavering, and capped it with the 6th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-Finish stretch. Her 1:34:38 was in a different time zone from the rest of the age group; runner-up Maven Pinkston (1:40:36) finished nearly six minutes back, and third-place Jaimie Carolan (1:44:17) another three-and-a-half minutes behind that.

The real drama in this age group played out in the battle for the final podium spots. Carolan held 3rd through the early going but faded over the closing miles, dropping from 8th to 13th among women as her 26th-fastest closing split told the story. McDonough, meanwhile, was moving the other direction — climbing from 18th to 14th among women with the 13th-fastest closing split in the women's field, ultimately finishing just 11 seconds behind Carolan (1:44:28 to 1:44:17). Eleven seconds over 13.1 miles in those conditions is a margin that will sting.

Further back, the field spread out predictably through the humidity and wind, with Grace Pepper (5th, 1:48:49) and Lacey Murray (6th, 1:50:55) rounding out the top six. Forty-six women finished the F30-34 age group — a solid turnout for a December race in Huntsville — and Bates gave them a clear, dominant champion to measure themselves against.
