• The top two both surged through the back half — Davies moved from 57th to 44th among the men, Sleasman from 73rd to 46th, each posting a top-40 men's split on the 10K-to-finish stretch.
• Karl Porter and Tony Lowe ran nearly identical races to claim 3rd and 4th, separated by only 43 seconds across 13.1 miles.
• A wide spread defined the field: the 20th finisher, Bob Liebl, crossed in 2:46:36 — nearly an hour behind Davies.

In warm, windy December conditions — 70°F, 17 mph winds, and 76% humidity, unusual for a Huntsville winter — the M50-54 group put together a compelling front-end battle. Davies and Sleasman, both from Madison, Alabama, were clearly the class of the field. Davies ran 8:12/mi to claim the win, and Sleasman was right on his heels at 8:14/mi. Crucially, both men were gaining ground in the back half: their moves from the 57th and 73rd spots among men to 44th and 46th, respectively, tell the story of two runners who got stronger as others faded in the heat.

The next tier — Porter (1:52:02) and Lowe (1:52:45) — ran a parallel race of their own, never more than a minute apart and finishing that way. Both faded slightly through the 10K-to-finish segment, each drifting back in the men's field, suggesting the conditions took their toll. David Nielsen rounded out the top five in 1:57:49, also gaining ground late and posting a strong back-half split.

From Jeff Swinney's 1:59:04 in 7th to Forrest Bridges' 2:04:13 in 9th, a tight cluster of runners battled through the mid-pack, separated by just over five minutes across four places. Behind them, the field spread out considerably — Matthew Erb (14th, 2:20:19) through Bob Liebl (20th, 2:46:36) spanning more than 26 minutes on their own. In a race where the heat and wind punished any early ambition, Davies and Sleasman's ability to close hard made the difference at the top.
