Vicki Gerrein of Union, KY, owned the F55-59 race from the gun, and the numbers back it up. Her 1:51:05 — 8:28 per mile in 70°F heat with a 17 mph wind — gave her a cushion of more than four minutes over 2nd place. She did drift from 22nd to 28th among women across the back half, but her 36th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-finish leg kept her well clear of the field behind her.

Anna Underwood of Athens, AL, was the closest challenger, finishing in 1:55:28 at 8:48/mi. What makes her run notable is the direction of travel: she moved from 38th to 34th among women in that closing stretch, posting the 37th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-finish segment. Elizabeth Goedecke of Birmingham rounded out the podium in 1:58:29 — the only other F55-59 finisher to break two hours.

The battle for 4th and 5th was the most animated sub-plot of the afternoon. Sareeta Parker of Atlanta came home 4th in 2:07:14, but Susan Jones of Mobile was the one turning heads late. Jones climbed from 108th to 87th among women over the final 10K — a surge that translated into the 81st-fastest women's split on that segment and a 5th-place finish in 2:08:12, just 58 seconds behind Parker. On a warm, windy December day in Huntsville, that kind of late acceleration was worth noticing.
