M25-29 5K: Arkes Laps the Field in Napa

Daniel Arkes didn't race the M25-29 field on Sunday morning — he lapped it. The 25-year-old from Davis crossed in 16:00 at a 5:09/mi clip, a pace so far ahead of the rest that second-place George Joseph (20:52) finished nearly five full minutes back. That's not a win; that's a statement. In a field of 13, Arkes stood in a category of one.

Joseph, running 6:43/mi out of Los Altos Hills, at least had the satisfaction of a comfortable hold on second — more than 90 seconds ahead of the podium battle unfolding behind him. That battle belonged to Jimmy Stephenson (22:29, 7:14/mi) and Adam Taylor (22:44, 7:19/mi), who ran the back half of the race within striking distance of each other. Stephenson claimed third by 15 seconds, with Taylor just behind in fourth. Matthew Burke rounded out the top five in 23:29 (7:34/mi), the last man under 24 minutes.

From there the field spread out across the cold Napa morning. Harry Bleyan (6th, 26:04) and Eric Bakar (7th, 26:50) ran within 46 seconds of each other in the 8-minute-per-mile range, while Yu-Tao Tseng (8th, 29:14), Hunter Johnson (9th, 31:17), and Aaron Leong (10th, 31:50) formed a loose cluster through the back half of the results. Lucas Tindall (11th, 33:28), Peter Ryzanych (12th, 42:10), and Kevin Kuczynski (13th, 46:01) — a Napa local — completed the field, Kuczynski finishing on home turf in just under 47 minutes.
