On a crisp 36°F morning in Napa, Joseph Schmitz made the M40-44 race his own from the start. The 40-year-old local finished in 24:20 at a 7:50/mi clip — a pace that put him 1:51 ahead of the next man across the line. That kind of margin in a 5K isn't a close race; it's a statement.

Behind Schmitz, the real competition was for the podium's silver and bronze. Jeffrey Bullock (2nd, 26:11, 8:26/mi) held off Rolando Carias (3rd, 26:55, 8:40/mi) by 44 seconds — a meaningful gap at this distance, with Bullock running noticeably the sharper pace. Fellow 40-year-old Zhitao Qu, also a Napa local, claimed 4th in 28:39 (9:13/mi), more than a minute and a half back of Carias.

The middle of the field clustered between 32 and 35 minutes, with Jonathan Bergman (5th, 32:29), Joe Cadelago (6th, 33:00), Sivakumar Hariharan (7th, 34:32), Paul Martin (8th, 34:42), and Luis Gonzalez II (9th, 35:09) all finishing within a three-minute window. Rick Wong (10th, 38:42) and Ryan Purnell (11th, 40:02) kept things moving into the 40s, followed by John Vescovi (12th, 42:00), Scott Atchison (13th, 42:14), Josh Ziese (14th, 43:58), and Thiru Sinnathamby (15th, 46:31). Darius Nagal completed the M40-44 field in 55:02, crossing the line to finish a morning that, top to bottom, covered every corner of this age group.
