Napa Valley Marathon 5K — M45-49: Tarver Takes It in a Brisk Morning Run

Thirty-six degrees and a light breeze greeted ten M45-49 runners on the Napa Valley course on Sunday morning, and Russ Tarver of Sonoma made the cold feel irrelevant. His 24:22 finish at a 7:51/mi clip was decisive from the start — no one in the field came close to matching that tempo.

Barry Napier of Edmonds was the clear runner-up, crossing in 25:24 at 8:11/mi. That's a meaningfully different pace from Tarver's — not a near-miss, but a solid second-place performance that left Napier comfortably ahead of the rest of the field. Brian Thompson of Orangevale rounded out the podium in 30:40 (9:52/mi), more than five minutes behind Napier and a full six-plus minutes off the winning time.

The middle of the field saw Anthony Franco (33:27, 10:46/mi) and Pete Niesen (34:07, 10:59/mi) separated by just 40 seconds in fourth and fifth, while Joeffrey Villegas (40:01) and Wisanu Charoenkul (40:44) ran a similar story in sixth and seventh. Gang Xiong of Pleasanton finished eighth in 42:30. Lawrence Valdez and Baufu Yueh — both age 49 — closed out the ten-man field in ninth and tenth, finishing 51:14 and 51:46 respectively, just 32 seconds apart at the back of the pack.
