M50-54 5K: Pettinger dominates in Napa's morning chill

With temperatures hovering at 36°F under scattered clouds in Napa, the M50-54 field of ten lined up for what turned out to be a one-man show at the front. Seattle's Joe Pettinger, 50, ran a crisp 7:00/mi pace to finish in 21:45 — a performance that simply had no answer in this group. By the time Pettinger crossed the line, no one else was close.

Tiburon's Jad Dunning, 53, secured 2nd in 27:20 at 8:48/mi — a solid run, but the gap to Pettinger tells the real story: 5:35 of clear daylight between first and second. The more compelling battle played out further back, where Pleasant Hill's Russell Ouchida (52) and Bedford's Dave Carey (51) staged the tightest contest of the morning. Ouchida took 3rd in 33:20, with Carey just 19 seconds behind in 33:39 — both running in the 10:44–10:50/mi range.

Mike Church (51, Orlando) finished 5th in 34:39, just a minute back of Carey, while Oakley's Marlowe Echavia crossed 6th in 38:24. Craig Commodore and Paul Doforno — both 51 and both from Orlando — finished 7th and 8th in 41:46 and 41:57 respectively, just 11 seconds apart. Germantown's Billy Newson (54) came home 9th in 51:00, and Fremont's Mel Tayco (53) closed out the M50-54 field in 53:54, completing the 5K at 17:21/mi on a cold Napa morning.
