The Seattle 50-year-old went out at 7:00/mi and never looked back, finishing in 21:45 and putting 2 minutes and 35 seconds between himself and the rest of the Masters Men field. Behind him, the race for the podium was a genuine contest. Joseph Schmitz, 40, of Napa ran 24:20 at 7:50/mi to take 2nd, while Russ Tarver, 47, from nearby Sonoma closed in 24:22 at 7:51/mi — a catch-up effort that nearly worked, but Schmitz held on by two ticks of the clock. Third place was earned, not gifted.

The 4th and 5th spots told their own story. San Francisco's Tadashi Yano, 62, and Park Ridge's Kevin Blindauer, 61, both averaged 8:02/mi and finished within three seconds of each other — 24:56 and 24:59 respectively. Two runners in their early 60s trading blows all the way to the line is exactly what Masters racing is supposed to look like.

Further back, the field's elder statesmen deserve their moment. Ricky Wilkerson of Decorah ran 31:40 at age 70 to take 17th, while Berkeley's David Olson — 76 years old — crossed in 31:56 for 18th. In a field of 64, those two didn't just finish; they outran dozens of younger competitors to get there.
