On a cool, calm March morning in Napa — 41°F with barely a breeze — Karen Frindell Teuscher of Santa Rosa put in a commanding performance to win the F45-49 race. Her 1:35:32 at a 7:17/mi clip was in a class of its own: more than ten minutes separated her from everyone else in the field. She posted the 60th-fastest women's split on the back half (6.9M to the finish), holding strong to the line.

The real drama unfolded behind her. Amy Haley (Newport Beach) and Lori Braunstein (Oakland), both 47 and 45 respectively, were locked in a tight contest all the way home. Haley crossed 2nd in 1:45:41, with Braunstein just 15 seconds back in 1:45:56. What makes it interesting: both women were deep in the women's field through the first half — Haley sitting around 148th among women, Braunstein around 145th — before both surged on the back half. Haley's second-half split ranked 111th among women, Braunstein's 117th. Haley ran it just a tick faster to hold the edge; the gap closed but didn't close all the way.

Elvia Tarango (Redondo Beach, 4th, 1:47:37) and Valerie Saletta (Phoenix, 5th, 1:48:12) completed a competitive top five, though both faded slightly in the back half — Tarango slipping from 143rd to 149th among women, Saletta from 146th to 157th. Laural Larkin (Monterey, 6th, 1:49:34) and Emi Yasaka (San Rafael, 7th, 1:49:51) kept it close behind them, separated by just 17 seconds. All told, 142 women finished in F45-49, with the entire listed top 20 under two hours — a strong showing on a fast Napa morning.
