On a crisp 41°F morning in Napa Valley, Zachary Hine of East Palo Alto made the M35-39 race look almost unfair. He held the top spot among all men from start to finish, and backed it up with the 5th-fastest men's split on the back half of the course. Nobody in the 35-39 field came close to testing him.

The real drama unfolded behind him. Matthew Logan ran a smart, building race — sitting 16th among men at the 6.9-mile mark, he reeled off the 13th-fastest men's split on the closing stretch to finish 2nd in 1:11:15, a full five minutes back of Hine but clearly the strongest closer on the podium. Chris Johnson, by contrast, had been running 15th among men through 6.9 miles but faded to 22nd by the line, finishing 3rd in 1:14:36. His 31st-fastest closing split left the door open for Jeff Aspinall and Dylan Kent, who ran the 24th- and 28th-fastest closing splits respectively — but Johnson's earlier cushion held, and Aspinall (1:16:06) and Kent (1:16:21) had to settle for 4th and 5th.

Yu Zhang (1:17:02) and Tyler Abrams (1:17:22) rounded out the top seven, with Parker Daniells and Ricardo Mazzini both clocking 1:20-something to fill 8th and 9th. Isaac Sorkin (1:21:22) and Kyle Brocklehurst (1:21:46) kept the competition tight through the top eleven. With 117 finishers in total, the M35-39 group was one of the deeper fields on the course — and Hine made it look like a training run.
