Napa Valley Half Marathon M40-44: Fraioli edges Koss in a blistering battle at the front

In cool, calm Napa Valley conditions — 41°F and barely a breeze — the M40-44 race delivered one of the sharpest battles of the morning at the front. Mario Fraioli of Novato took the win in 1:14:18, running 5:40 per mile to finish 19th among all men. Right on his heels was Ben Koss of San Francisco, who crossed in 1:14:24 — six seconds back and 20th among the men. Chip Scarinzi of Alameda rounded out the podium in 1:14:48, just 24 seconds behind Koss and 30 seconds off the winner.

What makes the podium especially striking is how the final 6.9 miles played out. Scarinzi actually posted the fastest of the three men's splits on that closing stretch — the 21st-fastest men's split in the field — with Koss running the 22nd and Fraioli the 23rd. That means Scarinzi was the one making up ground late, closing hard but running out of real estate. Fraioli and Koss, who both moved up one place among the men over that segment, had simply built enough of a cushion to hold on. Six seconds is a very slim margin to defend, and Fraioli did exactly that.

Jason Arango of Seattle was the clear fourth-place finisher, finishing in 1:17:41 (5:56/mi) — nearly two and a half minutes behind Scarinzi but a comfortable gap ahead of the rest. Aaron Hansen of Quincy rounded out the top five in 1:21:15, though he faded slightly over the back half, slipping from 37th to 41st among men on that final segment. Landall Proctor of Berkeley was sixth in 1:22:02, with Jules Masalunga, Andrew Bradley, Nicholas Keller, and Stanley Hu filling out the top ten between 1:25:42 and 1:29:55.

The depth of the M40-44 field across all 105 finishers was real. Even 20th place — Jon Southam of Napa in 1:41:32 — represents solid half-marathon running, and the spread from winner to 20th tells the story of a wide, competitive group racing hard on a brisk March morning in the valley.
