M30-34 Half Marathon: Lenehan edges a razor-sharp podium in Napa

Under cool, calm skies in Napa — 41°F with barely a breeze — the M30-34 field of 146 delivered one of the sharpest podium battles of the morning. Matt Lenehan crossed in 1:06:32 at a 5:05/mi clip, good for 2nd among all men, and the win in M30-34. But he had to earn every second of it. Alex Russeau (1:06:49, 5:06/mi) and Clayton Pierce (1:06:56, 5:06/mi) were right on his heels, and the story of how the race was decided is written entirely in the second half.

From 6.9 miles to the finish, Lenehan ran the fastest men's split in the field, Russeau the second-fastest, and Pierce the third-fastest. That's not a coincidence — these three were locked in a battle deep into the race, and Lenehan simply had the most left when it mattered. Russeau finished 17 seconds back; Pierce another 7 seconds behind him. Both held their gender standings through the finish, which tells you the order was set early and nobody faded — Lenehan just pulled away cleanly.

Seth Totten rounded out the top four in 1:07:53 (5:11/mi), running 8th among men and posting the 8th-fastest back-half split — a strong, consistent effort 61 seconds off the lead. Matt Chorney moved up one spot in the men's field over the closing miles to finish 5th in M30-34 in 1:08:45, his 10th-fastest men's back-half split confirming he closed well too. Then came a gap: Nathaniel Beach (1:11:57) and Anthony Lee (1:11:59) were separated by just two seconds in 6th and 7th.

Dmitry Kislyuk brought a bit of history to his 8th-place finish. Running 1:12:31, he trimmed five seconds off his 2022 Napa performance of 1:12:36 — a small but meaningful improvement on the same course, same race, one year later.
