Napa Valley 5K: Kaylie Escobar-Islas Claims F18-20 in the Rain

Kaylie Escobar-Islas of Merced made her intentions clear from the start, running a 10:32/mi pace to finish in 32:42 — a margin of 1:45 over the next finisher. In a six-woman field where the gaps behind her were measured in seconds and minutes, Escobar-Islas ran a race in a different gear entirely.

The real drama played out in the chase pack. Melanie Camacho (San Diego) crossed in 34:27 at 11:05/mi to claim 2nd, with Napa local Annette Sanchez pressing her all the way to the line at 35:05 and 11:18/mi — just 38 seconds back. That's a genuine battle over 3.1 miles in the rain, and Camacho held it together when it mattered. Anuha Reddy of Sacramento rounded out the top four in 36:40, running 11:48/mi and finishing 1:35 behind Sanchez.

Rounding out the field, Acacia Buller — one of two 18-year-olds in the race — finished 5th in 40:51 (13:09/mi), and fellow 18-year-old Jas Rafanan of Milpitas completed the course in 55:54 to claim 6th. Six women lined up, six women finished, doing it in cold, drizzly conditions that made every mile a little harder to run.
