F1-17 Half Marathon: Schuemann Dominates as Young Napa Runners Take the Stage

• Hailey Schuemann, 16, wins in 1:49:18 — a full 17 minutes ahead of 2nd place, averaging 8:20/mi through cold, rainy Napa Valley conditions.
• Madison Jew, just 14, claims 3rd in 2:16:52 — the youngest finisher on the podium, running 10:26/mi to hold off 4th-place Isamar Alcazar Ortiz by nearly 9 minutes.
• Malena Plancarte and Katherine Heil, both 13, finished 5th and 6th separated by just 11 seconds — 2:33:42 to 2:33:53 — the tightest battle of the day in the F1-17 field.
• Eight finishers completed the half marathon in the F1-17 field, ranging from age 13 to 17, with five of the top six hailing from Napa Valley towns.

Hailey Schuemann made the F1-17 race her own from the start. The 16-year-old from Napa moved through the women's field at 8:20/mi, and while the cold, drizzly 40°F morning tested everyone on the course, her margin told the real story: 17 minutes and 3 seconds separated her from runner-up Gracie Johnson. Schuemann's gender standing did slip from 96th to 175th as the miles accumulated, but that reflects the sheer size of the women's field she was running through — her 1:49:18 finish was untouchable within the F1-17 field.

Gracie Johnson, 17, crossed in 2:06:21 at 9:38/mi to claim 2nd, while 14-year-old Madison Jew delivered one of the more impressive performances of the morning by holding 3rd in 2:16:52. Jew was the youngest finisher in the top half of the field, and her 10:26/mi pace proved more than enough to keep 4th-place Isamar Alcazar Ortiz (2:25:44, 11:07/mi) at a comfortable distance.

The most compelling finish-line drama played out between 5th and 6th. Malena Plancarte, 13, from Saint Helena, and Katherine Heil, also 13 and also from Saint Helena, ran the entire race in close company and finished just 11 seconds apart — Plancarte in 2:33:42 and Heil in 2:33:53. Emma Posey, 17, finished 7th in 2:56:04, and Grace Trevethick, 13, rounded out the eight-finisher field in 2:58:00 — becoming the only athlete to break the three-hour mark from the back of the pack.
