M1-17 Half Marathon: Jack Moore Runs Away with It in the Rain

In 40-degree rain with a steady drizzle soaking the Napa Valley course, 22 boys took on the half marathon — and one of them made it look almost comfortable. Jack Moore ran 6:17/mi from start to finish, crossing in 1:22:21 to take the M1-17 win by 3:25 over second place. His mid-race split on the 3.1M–6.9M segment ranked 39th among all men in the field — a genuine show of strength tucked inside a dominant overall performance.

Behind Moore, the real drama played out between Victor Hoskins and Tommy Duffy, both 16, both running strong through the wet conditions. Hoskins held the edge through the middle miles — sitting 57th among men at the 6.9-mile mark to Duffy's 74th — but Duffy answered on the back half, posting the 54th-fastest men's split from 6.9M to the finish while Hoskins faded slightly to 69th in that same stretch. The result: Duffy closed the gap but couldn't quite reel Hoskins in, finishing 34 seconds back at 1:26:20 for third.

Fifth place belonged to Walter Heiser, whose race told a different story entirely. He was 241st among men at the first checkpoint — deep in the pack — but ran the 105th-fastest men's split on the final leg to surge all the way to 160th at the finish, clocking 1:38:22. Diego Sanchez (4th, 1:37:57) and Seth Koehler (6th, 1:40:57) rounded out the top six, with a steady pack of finishers stretching back through Dagon Mizuno (7th, 1:44:12) and 14-year-old Haku Homma (8th, 1:44:48). Felix Sirui Lin and Ryan Butler finished back-to-back in 9th and 10th — 1:47:44 and 1:47:45 — separated by a single second.
