Napa Valley Half Marathon F50-54: Tachiki dominates in the rain

• Mandy Tachiki won the F50-54 race in 1:34:52 (7:14/mi), finishing more than 5 minutes 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Jill Ellenbecker.
• A three-way battle for 5th–7th unfolded in the final miles: Sophia Huang, Yaneyra Pellascini, and Angela Borchers finished in 1:50:51, 1:50:53, and 1:50:54 — three runners separated by just three seconds.
• Courtney Chase (3rd, 1:42:06) posted the 102nd-fastest women's split on the 6.9M–Finish segment, steadily climbing from 139th to 117th among women across the race.
• Sophia Huang made the biggest move of anyone in the top 10, surging from 348th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 195th by the finish.

In cold, wet conditions — 40°F with light rain soaking the Napa Valley course — Mandy Tachiki of San Anselmo ran a commanding race from start to finish. Her 7:14/mi pace was in a different register entirely from the rest of the F50-54 field, and her positioning among the women's field reflected real strength: she climbed as high as 49th among all women through the middle segment before settling 60th at the line. The gap back to Jill Ellenbecker (2nd, 1:40:14, 7:39/mi) was decisive — this one wasn't close at the top.

Ellenbecker held steady throughout, running a consistent race to claim second in 1:40:14. Courtney Chase of Mount Shasta earned third in 1:42:06, and her best running came late — her 6.9M-to-finish split ranked 102nd among all women, helping her claw from 139th to 117th in the women's field over the back half of the course.

The most dramatic subplot played out just outside the top four. Sophia Huang of Los Altos was buried 348th among women through the opening miles, but she ran the middle segment with purpose — her 3.1M–6.9M split ranked 160th among women — and kept climbing all the way to 195th at the finish and 5th in the F50-54 field in 1:50:51. She just barely got there in time: Yaneyra Pellascini (1:50:53) and Angela Borchers (1:50:54) crossed within three seconds of her, making for one of the tightest three-way finishes of the morning. Across 108 finishers braving the rain, it was a strong day for the F50-54 field in Napa.
