In cold, wet Napa — 40°F and a light rain tapping the course all morning — the M30-34 race produced one of the tightest finishes of the day. Garrett Patrick led among the men from the gun and held that position through the first checkpoint at 3.1 miles, where he also posted the 3rd-fastest men's split of anyone in the field on that opening stretch. But by 6.9 miles he had slipped to 2nd among men, and Stephen Rathbun was hunting him down with a ferocious closing leg.

Rathbun's 6.9M-to-Finish split was the second-fastest among all men on that segment — a scorching finish that shaved the gap to a single second. Patrick crossed in 1:07:29, Rathbun in 1:07:30. Both averaged 5:09 per mile for the race; what separated them was who had it when it mattered most. Patrick, to his credit, had it just barely longer.

Dmitry Kislyuk (1:10:35, 5:23/mi) rounded out the podium with a composed, progressive race — sitting 8th among men at the first checkpoint and working his way to 6th by the finish on the strength of the 5th-fastest closing split in the men's field. Behind him, Nathaniel Beach (1:13:08) was the story of the mid-pack, charging from 22nd among men at 3.1 miles all the way to 13th at the tape with the 11th-fastest closing split. Matthew Meyer (5th, 1:13:24) and Collin Jarvis (6th, 1:14:42) rounded out a strong top six before the field spread, with 20th-place Nikolay Makhnenko finishing in 1:25:16 — nearly 18 minutes back of the winner across the M30-34 group's 139 finishers.
