He sat 21st among men early, gradually threading his way forward, and by the second half was posting the 8th-fastest second-half split in the men's field. That steady pressure was enough — barely. Behind him, two Folsom-area rivals were turning the final miles into a firefight.

Jesse Barragan (47, Folsom) and Corey Phillis (45, Sacramento) both ignited between Miles 10 and 15.6, running the 2nd- and 3rd-fastest splits on that segment in the entire men's field. Barragan had climbed as high as 9th among men at Mile 15.6; Phillis had surged from 32nd all the way to 12th at the same checkpoint. But neither could sustain it to the finish — Barragan slipped back to 18th among men at the line and Phillis to 15th — while Cantu, running the more even effort, held his ground. The result: 2:16:44, 2:16:52, 2:16:54. Ten seconds. Three men. One age group.

Brian Geiszler (47, Galt) was quietly excellent throughout, posting the 14th-fastest Mile 4→Mile 10 split in the men's field and finishing a comfortable 4th in 2:18:14 — close enough to the podium to feel the heat, far enough to watch it from a safe distance. William Downer (5th, 2:23:08) rounded out the top five, with Brandon Olson (6th, 2:28:09), Justin Puffer (7th, 2:33:55), and Jason Knight (8th, 2:34:31) leading the rest of a 51-strong M45-49 group home.
