Moving from 38th to 33rd among the men by Mile 4, then surging to 28th by the finish, Campbell ran with purpose from start to finish. His 8:10/mi average held strong, and his closing leg from Mile 10 to the finish was the 18th-fastest of any man in the field on that stretch — a sign he had plenty left in the tank when others were fading.

Behind Campbell, the battle for 2nd and 3rd played out between two Placerville runners. Abe Borba crossed in 1:57:00 at 8:56/mi, but it wasn't without cost — he slipped from 32nd among the men at Mile 4 all the way to 47th by the finish, meaning the field was catching him late. Walter Brand finished 3rd in 2:04:43 at 9:31/mi, having similarly faded from 33rd to 58th in the men's standings over the back half. Both ran strong opening miles; neither could hold the early pace.

Ethan Davis (4th, 2:10:44) and Gerardo Enriquez (5th, 2:15:32) rounded out the top five, with Davis holding his men's place steady from Mile 4 onward — a sign of more even pacing than the Placerville duo ahead of him.
