M35-39 Half Marathon: Viglienzoni rules the Parkway at 6:24 pace

Joe Viglienzoni, 37, of West Sacramento, ran the kind of race that announces itself early. He moved from 5th among men at the first checkpoint to 3rd by Mile 4 and held that position all the way to the tape — his 6:24/mi average good enough to win M35-39 by over a minute. At 74°F with humidity pushing 60%, that kind of sustained pace demanded genuine fitness, and Viglienzoni delivered it.

The battle for 2nd and 3rd was the most compelling subplot of the morning. Parker Daniells (38, Orangevale) and Jonathan Carter (39, Lodi) ran nearly in lockstep — Daniells at 6:29/mi for a 1:25:00, Carter at 6:33/mi for a 1:25:55. Both men held their positions among the men's field from Mile 4 onward, meaning neither faded nor surged dramatically; they simply ground each other down over 13.1 miles. Carter, the oldest of the top three at 39, earned his podium spot the hard way.

Behind the front pack, a significant gap opened before Nick Kakavas (36, Sacramento) claimed 4th in 1:34:22 — nearly nine minutes back of Carter, but strong enough on the second half to hold 8th among men to the finish. Matthew Green (37, Sacramento) was the notable mover in this group: after a modest start, he ran the second half faster than nearly everyone around him, climbing from 13th to 10th among men and locking up 5th in M35-39 at 1:36:16. Andrian Tumuruc rounded out the top six in 1:37:46, completing a clean lead group before the field spread wide across the rest of the afternoon.
