Behind her, the real drama played out in a three-way fight for the podium. Santa Cruz's Rachel Thomander held off San Francisco's Stephanie Cano by just 12 seconds — 26:07 to 26:19 — with both women running in the 8:24–8:28/mi range. San Mateo's Gloria Jauregui was right on their heels in 4th at 26:33, only 14 seconds behind Cano. Those three runners covered just 26 seconds of racing between them, making every stride matter.
