M20-29: Brodie Knibbs Runs Away From the Field in San Francisco

Brodie Knibbs, 22, from Macclesfield, delivered the most dominant performance in the M20-29 field on a cool, humid San Francisco morning. His 19:53 — run at 6:24 per mile — was in a different category entirely from the rest of the field. By the time Riina crossed in 22:41, Knibbs had already been standing around for nearly three minutes. That kind of margin in a 5K isn't a race — it's a statement.

Jacob Riina (2nd, 22:41) ran a composed 7:18/mi to hold off what became a genuinely fierce fight for the rest of the podium. Jonny Beville, 21, from San Francisco, claimed 3rd in 24:11, edging Fremont's Rishabh Meswani (24:13) by just two seconds and Petaluma's Julian Gaona (24:19) by eight. Those three ran at 7:47, 7:48, and 7:50 per mile respectively — a genuine dead sprint to the line across more than a mile of racing.

Leonardo Carvalho rounded out the top six in 24:49 (7:59/mi), just 30 seconds behind Gaona but unable to close the gap on the trio ahead. From 7th onward, the field spread out, with John Paul Dela Cirna (26:36) and James Paez (26:49) leading the next cluster. The 57°F overcast conditions were as good as San Francisco gets in July, and Knibbs made the most of every degree.
