M65-69: Vetter Runs Away With San Francisco's 5K

Douglas Vetter made the M65-69 race look like a solo time trial. The 65-year-old from Jackson, Mississippi crossed in 25:54 — a full 1:15 ahead of the next finisher — running 8:20 per mile through the cool, overcast San Francisco morning. Brian Kirk, also 65 and representing Huntington Beach, was the only man who came close to matching that front-of-field pace, clocking 27:09 at 8:44/mi to claim 2nd. The gap between those two and the rest of the field was stark: 3rd place came in more than 12 minutes later.

That battle for the final podium spot was one of the afternoon's most compelling subplots. Nelson Bernabe, racing on home turf in San Francisco, held off James Schaefer — another local — by 38 seconds, finishing 3rd in 39:27 (12:42/mi) to Schaefer's 40:05 (12:54/mi) in 4th. Koichi Morita (5th, 41:20) and Tony Serpas (6th, 42:37) — the latter traveling all the way from London — kept the middle of the field tightly packed, with just over a minute separating 3rd through 6th place.

The back half of the field spread out considerably, with Tim Jenks (10th, 48:06), Frank Lavin (11th, 49:03), and Rey Orozco (12th, 49:58) all finishing within two minutes of each other around the 49-minute mark. Then came a longer gap before Sam Bern (13th, 57:00) and Raj Kapany (14th, 57:07) arrived almost simultaneously. The final three — Juan O'Meany (15th, 1:04:10), Philip Vargas (16th, 1:04:11), and Raymond De Guzman (17th, 1:04:26) — finished within 16 seconds of one another, a fitting tight cluster to cap off the M65-69 field.
