The 61-year-old from San Francisco ran a controlled 9:16/mi to win in 28:46, putting a half-minute gap between himself and the rest of the field that none of the 11 other finishers could close.

Scott Kinney made the strongest push, running 9:32/mi from Minneapolis to claim 2nd in 29:36 — a solid effort, but Desjardins had already done the damage. Behind those two, a genuine contest unfolded for the final podium spot. Georgios Melissaris of Peania Attikis held off Matthew Mackenzie of Novato, finishing 3rd in 33:04 to Mackenzie's 4th-place 33:26 — a 22-second margin that kept things interesting to the finish line.
