M19 & Under 5K: Catanach Leads a Stacked Young Field Through the San Francisco Fog

• Justin Catanach, 15, wins in 19:03 (6:08/mi) — a 13-second margin over 13-year-old Owen Felix (19:16, 6:12/mi).
• Arsène Recq completes the podium in 20:15 (6:31/mi), finishing a full minute ahead of 4th-place Thomas Mulder (21:04).
• Mulder and Simon Gehrke battle to the wire — just 3 seconds apart at 21:04 and 21:07 — the tightest gap in the top 10.

Cool, overcast conditions on the San Francisco waterfront set the stage for a sharp performance from Novato's Justin Catanach. The 15-year-old ran a disciplined 6:08/mi to cross in 19:03, never relinquishing the lead. Breathing down his neck for most of the race was 13-year-old Owen Felix, who made the trip from Crestwood, Kentucky and answered with a 6:12/mi effort — finishing in 19:16. That 13-second gap is tight, but Felix earned every second of it; the two ran genuinely different paces, with Catanach the faster man throughout.

Arsène Recq of Valencisse rounded out the podium in 20:15 (6:31/mi), running a noticeably more conservative pace than the top two but still pulling clear of the field behind him. The gap from 3rd to 4th was the biggest on the podium — nearly 50 seconds — before Thomas Mulder (21:04, 6:47/mi) and Simon Gehrke of Belmont (21:07, 6:48/mi) waged their own private duel for 4th and 5th. Three seconds and a single second per mile separated them at the line.

The middle of the field featured a cluster of Bay Area teenagers — Haku Homma (22:22), Jmel Tesfai (22:35), and Jonathan Han (22:45) — running within 23 seconds of each other for 6th through 8th. Further back, 10-year-old Gabriel Lim of San Francisco crossed in 26:51 to claim 14th, with 11-year-old Yuki Takahashi of Cupertino just three seconds behind in 15th at 26:54. Across all 62 finishers, the M19 & Under field showed genuine depth — and more than a few runners who will be back on this starting line for years to come.
