M30-34: Martig Runs Away From the Field in 16:02

Drew Martig didn't race the M30-34 field — he lapped it. The 32-year-old from Flagstaff, Arizona crossed in 16:02 at 5:10/mi, a pace that put him more than three minutes ahead of anyone else in the group. On a cool, overcast San Francisco morning — 57°F with a light breeze off the bay — conditions were about as good as they get for fast running, and Martig made full use of them.

Behind him, Rodrigo Patarroyo of Milpitas ran a composed 19:24 (6:15/mi) to claim 2nd, while Ben Reich of Dallas posted a 21:36 (6:57/mi) for 3rd. The gap from Patarroyo to Reich — over two minutes — was nearly as emphatic as the gap from Martig to Patarroyo, leaving the podium spread across more than five and a half minutes of racing.

The real drama in M30-34 unfolded from 4th place onward, where Prabhat Jha (23:40, 7:37/mi) and Prajwal Rajendra Prasad (23:48, 7:40/mi) were separated by just eight seconds, followed by Guillermo Palacios Diaz (24:14), William Ryan (24:19), and Michael White (24:20) — three runners packed into a six-second window. Michael Hew (24:37) and Abhay Chennagiri (24:46) kept the pressure on through 10th place, making spots 4 through 10 a genuine race within the race.
