Behind her, Amor Ai, 21, from San Jose ran a steady-to-strong race to take 2nd in 1:37:38. Ai sat 17th among women early, drifted back slightly through the middle miles, then reeled off the 12th-fastest women's closing split (10.65M to the finish) to reclaim 17th among women and lock up the runner-up spot in 1:37:38. Third and fourth were a genuine photo finish: Molly Cantillon (20, San Francisco) and Katherine Cheng (20, Palo Alto) both stopped the clock at 1:38:35, with Cantillon holding 3rd by the slimmest of margins. Cheng had the stronger finish — posting the 7th-fastest women's closing split — charging from 40th among women at the gun to 22nd at the line, but Cantillon's earlier surge on the 2.13M→6.62M segment (13th-fastest women's split there) had built just enough of a cushion.

The most dramatic trajectory in the entire F20-29 field belonged to Lucy Downing.
