M50-54: Kuntz Runs Away from the Field in San Francisco

Running a crisp 6:58/mi average, the 52-year-old from Turlock steadily cut through the broader women's field — moving from 106th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 55th by the finish — and posted the 41st-fastest split in the field on the closing 10.65M-to-finish stretch. That late-race surge sealed what was already a commanding margin: nearly five minutes over second place in a 157-finisher field is a decisive win by any measure.

Ian Wang, racing on his home streets of San Francisco, ran a composed 7:21/mi to hold second in 1:36:26. Behind him, Qiang Song (1:39:13, 7:34/mi) and Qing Lu (1:40:35, 7:40/mi) filled out the podium spots, with Song posting a notably quick 7.12M-to-10.65M split — the 90th-fastest in the women's field on that segment — to consolidate third. Lu's trajectory was arguably the most dramatic in the group: he was buried deep in the field through the opening miles but worked his way steadily forward to claim fourth.

The race for fifth through eighth produced some of the tightest racing of the day. Eric Ahlstrand (1:42:32) arrived fifth, followed by Kohlmann (1:42:47) and Redmond (1:42:48) — those two separated by a single second after 13.1 miles of racing through San Francisco. Jay Hum (1:43:06) was just 18 seconds further back in eighth. Further down, Jinyuan Qiao (1:49:41) and Alan Zhu (1:49:42) mirrored that photo-finish drama, crossing in 13th and 14th with the same displayed time — though the places confirm Qiao edged ahead.
