San Francisco Half Marathon 2024: Goulder Dominates the M65-69 Field

Jeffrey Goulder, 65, from Scottsdale, AZ, made this look like a different race from everyone else. His 7:27/mi average was a full 41 seconds per mile faster than runner-up Frank Van Lier's 8:08/mi — a gap that compounded relentlessly across 13.1 miles and produced a winning margin of 8:55. Goulder was also moving through the men's field as the race progressed, climbing from 134th among men at the first checkpoint to 115th by mile ten, a sign he was running his own disciplined race while others faded around him.

Van Lier, 66, from Highland Heights, OH, had a strong second half on his hands. His 220th-fastest men's split on the 7.12M–10.65M segment was a genuine surge — he climbed from 680th among men at the first checkpoint all the way to 317th by the finish, a remarkable charge through the field that secured him the silver. Leonardo Nastasi, 68, making the trip from Montreal, finished 3rd in 1:49:19 at 8:20/mi, and while Van Lier held him off by 2:38, Nastasi ran the more consistent early race, sitting around 400th among men through the middle miles.

Behind the podium, Frank Lee (4th, 1:55:59) and Christopher Sullivan (5th, 2:02:05) kept the competition honest, with Christopher Chase (6th, 2:06:19) and Don Holland (7th, 2:06:56) separated by just 37 seconds. The back half of the M65-69 field spread across a wide range of efforts, from Mark Walters (8th, 2:11:37) through George Hollingsworth Wigfall III (20th, 2:41:33) — 27 finishers in all, each earning their miles on one of America's most demanding urban half marathon courses.
