Michael Hurlston ran a composed, controlled race from the front. Bannon and Cincola ran the race's most compelling sub-plot. Bannon (3rd, 1:42:06) held the edge throughout, posting the 147th-fastest split in the field on the early 2.13M–6.62M stretch, while Cincola (4th, 1:42:40) was stronger on the 6.62M–7.12M segment. Neither could fully close the gap, and 34 seconds remained between them at the finish. David Fu rounded out the top five in 1:44:02, the only other M55-59 finisher under 1:45.

Behind the top five, the field settled into a steady procession. Lixin Yang (6th, 1:49:05), Ryujiro Tsuchihashi (7th, 1:49:26), and Klaus Lange (8th, 1:49:43) finished within 38 seconds of one another, while Peter Lloyd (9th, 1:50:13) and Dave Kubel (10th, 1:50:39) completed a tight cluster just past the 1:50 mark. The 20th finisher, Ramanan T K, crossed in 2:00:37 — a reminder of just how much ground Hurlston's 7:16 pace covered on a notoriously hilly San Francisco course.
