Edmund Hart, 45, from Pacifica, crossed in 1:37:24 to take M45-49 honors at the 2024 San Francisco Marathon Half, running a composed 7:26-per-mile average on a course that has humbled plenty of faster-looking starters. His gender-place progression — from 196th early on all the way to 115th by the finish — tells the story of a runner who built through the field rather than going out hot and hanging on.

The battle for the rest of the podium was genuinely gripping. Simon Forshaw (1:38:34) made his decisive move in the middle miles, posting a standout split between 6.62M and 7.12M to pull clear of the chase pack. But Yiquan Hu (1:38:47) and Kanek Zagal (1:38:50) — both 49 years old — refused to let the race slip away quietly. Hu clawed back ground in the 7.12M–10.65M stretch, and Zagal was similarly relentless through the early middle segment. In the end, just 13 seconds separated 2nd from 4th.

Brian Hoffman rounded out the top five in 1:40:50, though his 7:42/mi pace and a 196th-ranked split on the 7.12M–10.65M segment suggest the back half of the course was a grind. Behind him, Tomoyuki Takiguchi (6th, 1:41:23) and Hyunwoong Kim (7th, 1:42:27) held firm, while the top 20 stretched out to Robert Gatto's 1:51:07 — a spread of nearly 14 minutes that reflects the full competitive range M45-49 brought to the streets of San Francisco.
