San Francisco 5K 2024: Tara Esperanza Owns the F50-54 Field

Tara Esperanza set the tone from the start. The 51-year-old from Oakland crossed in 24:11 at a 7:47/mi clip — a commanding performance that left no doubt at the front. Her margin over second place was 34 seconds, and over third place a full four and a half minutes. In a 5K, that's not a gap — that's a statement.

Cory Logan, 54, from San Diego made it a genuine two-woman front pack, running 24:45 at 7:58/mi to lock up 2nd. The pace difference between Logan and Esperanza was real and consistent — nearly 11 seconds per mile — but Logan's effort was still well clear of everyone else in the field. These two ran in a different gear from the rest of the F50-54 runners.

Behind them, Susan Johnston (San Francisco, 28:31) and Susanna Constantino (Stockton, 28:55) waged the race's most compelling battle for position. Just 24 seconds separated 3rd from 4th across 3.1 miles, with Johnston holding off Constantino to claim the final podium spot. Kiela Jimenez rounded out the top five in 31:35 (10:10/mi), followed by Louise Murphy in 6th at 33:25.

Further back, a cluster of runners between 8th and 10th place — Monisa Croxton (34:55), Malissa Karsseboom (34:58), and Stacey Li (35:13) — were separated by just 18 seconds across three spots, making for some of the tightest racing of the day in the F50-54 field. All 46 finishers navigated the cool, breezy San Francisco morning to get it done.
