That margin of victory — more than five minutes over Stephen Dockery's 30:24 — was the defining story of the race up front. Dockery, making the trip from Clarendon Hills, IL, held 2nd comfortably, while Chris Malins of Seattle rounded out the podium in 33:05.

The race for 4th was a different kind of drama. Kulwant Gill of Manteca and Saratoga's Tony Chang ran virtually side-by-side for the entirety of the 5K, separated at the finish by just four seconds — Gill in 35:47, Chang in 35:51. Behind them, Hongwu Jia (6th, 37:43) and Suhas Kulkarni (7th, 38:52) gave way to a genuine cluster: Kulkarni, Lopez, Esparza, and Fedoroff all finished within 13 seconds of each other from 7th through 10th, with 12:31 to 12:35 per mile separating those four athletes.

The 19-man field stretched out from there, with Sandip Chitale (11th, 39:28) through Chi Hung Lin (15th, 44:44) spread across five minutes of racing. Mario Oliveros finished 16th in 46:39, while Marc Stiller (17th, 52:56), Eduardo Duran (18th, 53:12), and Ram Sunder (19th, 1:00:59) completed the field — Sunder crossing the line just inside the hour mark at a 19:38/mi pace on the hilly San Francisco streets.
