M40-44: Castro Runs Away from the Field in SF

Jason Castro made the M40-44 race his own from the start. The 41-year-old from Alameda crossed in 22:14 at a 7:09/mi clip — a full 51 seconds ahead of the next man home. In a 5K, that's not a close race; that's a statement. The cool, overcast conditions (55°F, 89% humidity) were about as good as SF gets for racing, and Castro took full advantage.

Behind him, Maksim Semizhon (2nd, 23:05, 7:26/mi) and Braxton Showalter (3rd, 23:20, 7:31/mi) ran a genuine battle for the podium's lower steps. Semizhon held the edge by 15 seconds, running noticeably quicker than Showalter over the final stretch. Aaron Dawson rounded out the top four in 24:20 (7:50/mi), a full minute behind Showalter and already in a different tier of the race.

The most intriguing moment in the results came at 6th and 7th, where Wouter Poels of Venray and Rajiv Ranjan of Cupertino both stopped the clock at 28:26 (9:09/mi). The timing system split them by fractions of a second to award Poels 6th — a margin invisible to the naked eye. Aldo Pena Perez was right on their heels in 8th at 28:28, just two seconds back.

The field spread out considerably beyond the top eight, with Matthew Wyatt (9th, 30:18) and Aleksandr Cheushev (10th, 31:07) leading a pack of finishers bunched in the 31–35 minute range. All 61 men in M40-44 navigated the same breezy, fog-kissed SF morning — Castro just did it faster than anyone else.
