Joseph Molloy, 53, made his presence felt from the start. His 17:51 finish at 5:45/mi wasn't just a win — it was a statement, putting more than two and a half minutes of daylight between himself and the rest of the M50-54 field. On a damp 55°F morning with the Bay's characteristic chill in the air, Molloy ran a time that would have been competitive with the overall men's winners from prior editions of this race.

Eduardo Soto, 52, of South San Francisco, was the clear second-best in the field, crossing in 20:19 at 6:32/mi — a meaningfully different gear from Molloy, but a full six minutes clear of everyone else. Soto was the only other M50-54 runner to break 25 minutes, making the gap between 2nd and 3rd nearly as striking as the one at the top.

The real drama played out in the battle for the final podium spot. Kevin Murphy (54, Palo Alto) held on for 3rd in 26:17, but Dennis Hayes (54, Kihei, HI) was right on his heels at 26:25 — just eight seconds back. Jochen Schweitzer, 52, making the trip from Manly, NSW, rounded out the top five at 26:40, only 23 seconds behind Murphy. Three men, three different hometowns spanning California, Hawaii, and Australia, all within a tight 23-second window.

Further back, Yiwu Xie (28:09) and Lyndon McGee (28:41) led the next cluster, while the field spread out across a wide range of paces through the remaining 29 finishers. With 34 men completing the M50-54 race, the depth was real — Molloy simply ran a different race than everyone else.
