Barks & Brews 5K: Nakanishi dominates the F13-15 field

• Malea Nakanishi, 13, wins in 20:39 (6:39/mi) — a 1:42 margin over 2nd place Lily Warren.
• Warren (22:21) and Emily Capelli (23:11) rounded out the podium, separated by 50 seconds.
• Nakanishi posted the 5th-fastest closing split among all women from 1M to the finish, moving from 3rd to 4th among women overall — the strongest finisher in the age group.
• Honi West, 13, ran 23:56 to take 4th but faded on the back half, dropping from 17th to 24th among women on that closing segment.

Thirteen-year-old Malea Nakanishi made the F13-15 race her own from the start. Running a 6:39/mi average across the 5K course in Sacramento's warm Memorial Day conditions — 73°F, clear skies — she crossed in 20:39 and was never seriously threatened. Her closing mile was especially sharp: the 5th-fastest women's split on that final stretch told the real story of a runner who finished stronger than she started.

Behind Nakanishi, Lily Warren and Emily Capelli ran a clean, controlled race for the remaining podium spots. Warren's 22:21 (7:12/mi) held steady — she sat 11th among women at the mile mark and finished 11th, no ground lost, no ground gained. Capelli actually improved, moving from 20th to 18th among women on the closing segment to seal 3rd in 23:11. Honi West ran a solid 23:56 for 4th but gave back positions late, slipping from 17th to 24th among women after the mile mark.

The back half of the F13-15 field spread out considerably, with Natalie O'Connor (27:17) and Halahna Rockney (32:39) leading a group of nine finishers who ranged all the way to 1:08:49. Fourteen athletes completed the course, making it a well-attended age group on a sunny Sacramento morning — and Nakanishi's winning time stood as a clear benchmark above the rest.
