Barks & Brews 5K: Jackie Sword-Olson rules the F60-64 field

• Jackie Sword-Olson won the F60-64 age group in 23:38 (7:37/mi), posting the 22nd-fastest closing split among all women from 1M to the finish.
• Karen Jeffers was runner-up in 24:30 — a 52-second gap back — and held her own with the 30th-fastest women's closing split.
• Margo Covell was the group's biggest mover in the final stretch, climbing from 71st to 60th among women on the closing leg to claim 5th in the age group.
• The field of 26 spanned nearly 32 minutes from first to last listed finisher, with a tight top-four all finishing under 27 minutes.

Jackie Sword-Olson of Carmichael put together the kind of race that leaves no doubt: a 7:37/mi average over 5K on a warm Sacramento morning — 73°F with a light breeze — good enough to win the F60-64 age group by 52 seconds. Her closing mile was the 22nd-fastest among all women in the race, a sign she was still pressing hard when it mattered most.

Karen Jeffers (Marysville) held second comfortably, crossing in 24:30 with the 30th-fastest women's closing split in the field. Behind her, Heather Sims and Lisa Barry ran within 21 seconds of each other — 26:35 and 26:56 — to round out the podium and claim third and fourth. Both dropped a few spots among the women's field on the back half, but neither gave ground to each other.

The most entertaining story of the final stretch belonged to Margo Covell. Sitting 71st among women at the one-mile mark, she reeled in runners steadily and finished 60th — the sharpest climb in the age group over that closing segment — to secure 5th in 27:57. Lynn Marshall rounded out the top six in 28:12, just 15 seconds behind Covell.

Further back, the field spread wide: Cynthia Bosco, Debbie Palmer, and Lisa Geibel-Finn carried the race into the 30-minute range, while several finishers pushed on through the 40s and 50s. With 26 women completing the course, the F60-64 group was one of the deeper age groups on the day — and Sword-Olson led it wire to wire.
