Barks & Brews 5K: Sommerdorf Dominates F45-49 with a Sub-23 Effort

• Katie Sommerdorf (46, Sacramento) won the F45-49 group in 22:39 — a 7:18/mi pace that put more than 2:28 between her and the rest of the field.
• The 2nd–5th places were separated by just 35 seconds (25:07 to 25:42), making for a tight battle behind Sommerdorf.
• Allison Kegley posted the strongest closing kick in the top five, climbing from 47th to 34th among women on the final stretch with the 29th-fastest women's split on the 1M→Finish segment.
• A quirky finish at 12th and 13th: Milla Austin appears twice in the results — same name, age, and hometown — separated by just 0.10 seconds (31:51.36 vs. 31:51.46), with 43 women finishing across the F45-49 group.

Katie Sommerdorf made this one look straightforward. Running at 7:18 per mile in 73°F Sacramento heat, she crossed in 22:39 — a margin so commanding that second place was still more than two and a half minutes back. Her moves told the story in reverse: she came through the first mile among the top women in the field and, while she faded slightly in gender standing from 8th to 13th on the back half, that was a function of the women ahead of her, not any faltering on her part. She was simply in a different race than her F45-49 peers.

Behind her, Julie Fingar (49, Roseville) and Jossy Rodriguez (48, Roseville) ran almost in lockstep — 25:07 and 25:17, a 10-second gap for 2nd and 3rd. Rodriguez actually ran the stronger closing split among women in the field (37th-fastest vs. Fingar's 31st), but couldn't quite reel her in. Allison Kegley (47) and Lisa Lopez (49) rounded out the top five within another 25 seconds, with Kegley notably surging from 47th to 34th among women in the final mile — the most aggressive close of anyone in the top five. From 6th onward, Nicole Etchepare (45) led a steady procession through the rest of the top ten, with the gap to 10th place stretching to just over 29 minutes.
