Valarie Mckay of Roseville controlled the F50-54 race from start to finish, crossing in 26:06 at an 8:24/mi clip. She did give a little ground over the closing mile — slipping from 38th to 40th among women in the women's field — but her early work was more than enough to hold off the competition. Candie Malone of Sacramento pushed hard to the line, posting the 49th-fastest women's split on the 1M→Finish segment, but couldn't close the 9-second gap, finishing in 26:15.

The most interesting story of the race belonged to Jennifer Harwood. Running for Sacramento at age 54, she sat 69th among women at the one-mile mark — well off the pace of the leaders. But she turned in the 44th-fastest women's closing split in the field, surging past dozens of competitors to finish 49th among women and lock up 3rd in the F50-54 group in 27:02. That kind of negative-split finish on a warm, clear 73°F morning is worth noting.

Behind the podium, a significant gap opened up. Angie Brown (30:51) and Deborah Coulam (31:02) ran within 11 seconds of each other for 4th and 5th, both steadily working their way through the women's field in the back half. The rest of the 30-woman field spread out across a wide range of paces, with the full group representing Sacramento-area runners from Roseville to Vacaville — and plenty of reasons to come back next year.
