M25-29: Kaneyuki Jr. Dominates in Sacramento

• Brent Kaneyuki Jr. won the M25-29 age group in 15:35 — a blistering 5:01/mi average that put him ahead of 2nd-place Sam Nelson by more than three minutes.

Brent Kaneyuki Jr. turned the M25-29 race into a solo time trial from the gun. Running out of Antelope, the 25-year-old posted a 5:01/mi average — a pace that would be competitive on a track — and led among the men from start to finish. His margin over Sam Nelson at the line was 3 minutes and 16 seconds, which in a 5K is less a race than a statement.

Behind Kaneyuki Jr., the real contest was for the rest of the podium. Nelson, 28, made the most dramatic move of anyone in the top five, climbing from 29th among men at the one-mile mark all the way to 18th by the finish, crossing in 18:51 at 6:04/mi. Luis Leon (19:05) and Caleb Vu (19:19) rounded out the top four, with just 28 seconds separating 2nd through 4th — a genuine race within the race.

The battle for 7th place deserves its own footnote. Conor Abberton and Tyler Stoever both stopped the clock at 20:54 on the results sheet, but timing told the full story: Abberton's 20:54.06 edged Stoever's 20:54.36 by three-tenths of a second. In a 5K on a warm Sacramento morning — 73°F and clear — that's as close as it gets without sharing a finish tape.
