She held the lead in the age group throughout, but the race was anything but comfortable. Kaila Bishop, making her move from Morro Bay, was hunting her down the entire back half.

Bishop is the real subplot here. She entered the final mile sitting 27th among women and kept pressing, ultimately posting the 20th-fastest women's closing split in the field — meaningfully quicker than Burd's 24th-fastest over that same stretch. Bishop ran it faster. Burd just had enough of a cushion built from earlier miles to hold on, crossing 5 seconds ahead at 21:56.
