Barks & Brews 5K M80+: O'Haver leads three legends across the line

Three men, all past their 80th birthday, showed up to run a 5K on Memorial Day weekend in Sacramento — and that alone is the headline. Daniel O'Haver of Grass Valley led the M80+ group wire to wire, crossing in 43:44 at a 14:05/mi clip. He moved steadily through the men's field as the race progressed, gaining ground on the final stretch to finish 348th among the men — a number that says nothing about what it takes to be out there at 81.

Chris Pantos, at 85 the elder statesman of the group, came home in 49:13 — a 15:51/mi average. That's a noticeably slower pace than O'Haver's, but Pantos closed with purpose: his 3M-to-finish split ranked 338th among the men on that final segment, showing he still had something left when it mattered. Second place in 49:13 at age 85 is its own story.

Ronald Young made the trip from Incline Village, Nevada, and finished in 1:00:30 — a 19:29/mi pace — to claim 3rd in the M80+ group. His final segment also showed some life, ranking 387th among the men on the closing stretch. In a field of three, every finisher is a story, and Young's hour-plus effort on a clear, breezy Sacramento morning is exactly the kind of thing this race exists to celebrate.
