Barks & Brews 5K M35-39: Nyairo Races to a Sharp Win in Sacramento

• Melvin Nyairo took the M35-39 title in 16:26 (5:18/mi), finishing well clear of runner-up Kyle Lackner's 16:41.
• The top two were in a class of their own — 3rd-place Parker Daniells crossed in 17:41, a full minute behind the winner.

Melvin Nyairo, 37, of Sacramento, owned this race from the jump. He moved into 2nd among men through the opening mile and held that position through the finish, crossing in 16:26 at a 5:18/mi clip. His second-mile split was among the sharpest in the entire men's field — seventh-fastest on that 1M-to-2M stretch — and he never let the pace slip. Roseville's Kyle Lackner, 35, gave chase throughout, posting a 16:41 and the sixth-fastest 1M-to-2M split in the men's field, but Nyairo's early advantage proved too much to close. The 15-second gap between them was comfortable; the 60-second gap back to 3rd was emphatic.

Parker Daniells, 39, of Orangevale, claimed the final podium spot in 17:41, running a steady 5:42/mi to finish well ahead of the next cluster. Behind him, the race for 4th and 5th got interesting. Ryan Johnson, 36 (visiting from Carrollton, TX), was buried in 31st among men at mile one but ran the back half aggressively — posting the 17th-fastest men's split from mile two to three — to land 4th in 18:09. Sacramento's Paul Magaletti, 39, was just five seconds back in 5th at 18:14, having run a more even race throughout.

The middle of the M35-39 field filled out with a tight pack: Kyle Knutson (18:33), George Santana (18:40), and Christian Fox (18:48) ran within 15 seconds of each other for 6th through 8th. Trevor Cancilla and Cesar Cavazos then traded blows in the 19:40s — Cancilla edging it in 19:43 to Cavazos's 19:47 — to round out the top ten in a M35-39 group that stretched 73 finishers deep on a fine Sacramento morning.
