M25-29: Garrett Gardner Wires the Field in 15:43

The 28-year-old Sacramento native sat at the men's overall lead from the very first checkpoint and never relinquished it, averaging a crisp 5:04 per mile across all 3.1 miles and delivering the fastest 2M-to-3M split in the men's field. On a clear 68°F morning with a 14 mph breeze in Sacramento, conditions were about as cooperative as they get — and Gardner took full advantage.

Behind him, the podium fight was genuinely gripping. Nathan Burd (26, Davis) climbed from 7th among the men at the first mile marker all the way to 3rd by the finish, running the second-fastest closing segment in the men's field. Shane Marshall (27, Orangevale) was even more aggressive on that 3M-to-Finish stretch — posting the outright fastest closing split among the men — and landed 4th overall among men, good for 3rd in M25-29. The nine seconds separating Gardner, Burd, and Marshall across the finish line reflects just how compressed and competitive the front of this age group was.

Xavier Venegas (4th, 16:33) and Xavier Morales (5th, 17:04) rounded out the top five, with Venegas posting the 9th-fastest 1M→2M split and Morales the 10th on that same segment. From 6th place onward, the field spread considerably — Arlen Salguero-Coto and Michael Kuo both clocked 18:52 at 6th and 7th, with Cody Weiher (19:12) and Evan Timothy (19:15) close behind to close out the top ten in M25-29.
