M19-24: Barbour-Berson leads a swift Sacramento front pack at Barks & Brews

• A wide gulf opened after 3rd: Ethan Machado (4th, 21:04) finished more than two minutes behind Toncu, and the back half of the field ranged from 23:32 to 39:37.

On a clear Sacramento morning at 68°F with a steady 14 mph wind, the M19-24 race was decided at the front by three runners who were simply in a different gear. Luka Barbour-Berson, just 20 years old, crossed in 18:18 at a 5:54/mi clip to take the group win. He held a relatively stable position among the men throughout, and his pace held firm when it mattered most.

Jackson Yacullo told a different story. The 24-year-old from Auburn was buried in the men's field after the first mile but ran a strong middle segment — posting the 15th-fastest men's split on the 1M→2M stretch — to claw his way up and ultimately finish 2nd in 18:31. That's a 13-second deficit to Barbour-Berson: close enough to make it a real race, but Barbour-Berson had enough of a cushion that it never came to a photo finish. Keith Toncu (age 21, Sacramento) rounded out the podium in 18:57 at 6:06/mi, holding his own on the final push to the finish with the 21st-fastest men's split on the 3M→FINISH segment.

From 4th place onward, the field spread out considerably. Ethan Machado (21:04, 6:47/mi) finished 4th but was over two minutes behind Toncu, and James Miller (5th, 23:32, 7:35/mi) was another two and a half minutes back. The remaining 12 finishers spanned 25:30 to 39:37, with Nolan Lozano of Brentwood closing out the M19-24 group in 39:37. Every finisher brought their dog-friendly 5K to a close — but the real fireworks were all at the front.
