Napa Valley 5K — F35-39: Bocanegra Laps the Field in Napa

Maria Bocanegra of El Dorado Hills didn't race the F35-39 field so much as separate herself from it entirely. Her 18:38 finish at a 5:60/mi clip was 4 minutes and 17 seconds clear of the next finisher — a margin so wide it reframed the entire competition behind her. At 39, she was the oldest athlete on the podium and the most dominant presence in the field.

The real drama unfolded in the fight for silver. Rhonda McGee of Vacaville and Alison Johnston of San Francisco crossed the line in what the clock rounded to an identical 22:55 at 7:23/mi — but the timing chips told a finer story, and McGee claimed 2nd with Johnston just behind her in 3rd. Between them and the 25-minute mark stood only Zarur Simon of Guadalajara, who ran a composed 24:24 (7:51/mi) to lock up 4th.

The chase pack then tightened considerably. Aine Dwyer (5th, 25:45) and Tawnia Dugan of Petaluma (6th, 25:46) were separated by a single second — the narrowest gap of the entire race outside the McGee-Johnston photo finish. Jennifer Barkin of Oakland followed in 7th at 27:32, with Elizabeth Marxen and Justyna Czerniewska close behind in 8th (27:53) and 9th (27:58) respectively.

Further back, Katie Salowitz (28:24), Molly Conlon (28:27), and Churee O'Sullivan (28:32) ran within eight seconds of each other to fill out the top 12, while Lucie Brunetiere of Napa — racing in her own backyard — rounded out the top 20 at 32:36. All told, 45 women finished the F35-39 race on a brisk 42°F morning in the valley.
