Napa Valley 5K — M40-44: Windle Runs Away With It

• Devin Windle won in 23:14 (7:29/mi) — nearly 4 minutes and 44 seconds clear of 2nd place in a field of 18.
• Bernardo Sosa (27:58) and Suguru Nishioka (28:14) fought for the podium, separated by just 16 seconds.
• Places 6 and 7 — Daiyi Peng (30:54) and Bradley Frisk (30:56) — were split by a mere 2 seconds.
• The back half of the field spread across a wide range, from Jason Collins 5th in 30:16 to Craig Wilske 18th in 59:40.

Devin Windle made the M40-44 race his own from the gun. His 7:29/mi average was in a different gear entirely from the rest of the field — the next-closest finisher ran at 9:00/mi, and that gap of nearly five minutes at the line tells the whole story. On a chilly Napa morning, 42°F with a light wind, Windle ran a race that left 17 competitors in his wake without a contest for the top spot.

The real drama played out behind him. Bernardo Sosa of San Jose held off Suguru Nishioka of San Francisco for 2nd, crossing in 27:58 to Nishioka's 28:14. Sixteen seconds is tight enough to keep a race interesting all the way through, and Xiao Ma of Palo Alto wasn't far behind in 4th at 29:07, making that stretch of the results genuinely competitive. Jason Collins rounded out the top five in 30:16, just over a minute back from Ma.

The race's most razor-thin moment came at positions six and seven, where Daiyi Peng (30:54) and Bradley Frisk (30:56) finished within two seconds of each other — the tightest gap in the entire field. Todd Sickler came home 8th in 31:15, followed by William Taylor in 9th at 32:11 and local Napa runner Zhitao Qu in 10th at 32:41. Fellow Napa resident Ryan Shenk finished 12th in 35:15, and Craig Wilske — also of Napa — closed out the field in 18th at 59:40, completing the course on his own terms.
