Rocket City 10K — F40-44: Cook Dominates with a Four-Minute Gap

• Elizabeth Cook (44, Huntsville) won the F40-44 group in 53:51 — an 8:40/mi pace that put her more than four minutes clear of the field.
• Gretchen Abbott and Kiley Helton separated by just 48 seconds for 2nd and 3rd, both finishing within a minute of each other at 57:59 and 58:47.
• Lesley Carroll and Kristi McDonald finished 5th and 4th respectively — but their times were virtually identical at 1:01:49 and 1:01:50, separated by a single second.
• Eden Howard and Jamie Newman (7th and 8th) clocked 1:09:22 and 1:09:24 — two seconds apart after 6.2 miles of racing.

Elizabeth Cook made this one look straightforward. Running 8:40 per mile on a mild December morning in Huntsville, the 44-year-old local crossed in 53:51 — a margin of 4:08 over the runner-up. In a field of 32, that kind of gap doesn't happen by accident. Cook simply ran at a different register than everyone else in the F40-44 group.

Behind her, Gretchen Abbott (40, Owens Cross Roads) and Kiley Helton (40, Sylvania) ran a clean two-woman race for the podium. Abbott's 57:59 held off Helton's 58:47 — close enough to keep it interesting, but Abbott never relinquished 2nd. Both finished comfortably under the hour mark, which no one else in the group managed.

The battle for 4th and 5th produced the day's tightest finish. Lesley Carroll (44, Decatur) and Kristi McDonald (43, Germantown, TN) were inseparable — Carroll clocked 1:01:49, McDonald 1:01:50. The places differ, so Carroll took 5th and McDonald 4th by the narrowest of margins after more than six miles of running together.

Further back, the race delivered another near-dead-heat: Eden Howard (7th, 1:09:22) and Jamie Newman (8th, 1:09:24) were just two seconds apart at the line, with Kristen Duskey (9th, 1:10:19) close behind. With 32 women finishing across a spread of conditions, the F40-44 group gave Rocket City plenty to talk about — from Cook's wire-to-wire dominance to the photo-finish battles scattered throughout the pack.
