Masters Women 10K: Croushorn Dominates in Birmingham Blue

Julie Croushorn ran a race of a completely different order. Her 7:02/mi average across 10 kilometers left the Masters Women field in the distance, with a margin of 8 minutes and 28 seconds over second-place Cheryl Spangenberg (52:10, 8:24/mi). That gap isn't a close race — it's a statement. At 52, Croushorn didn't just win; she made the 111-woman field look like it was running a different event.

Behind her, the real competition unfolded. Spangenberg claimed 2nd in 52:10, with Beth Raper of Muscle Shoals finishing 3rd in 53:22 — 1:12 back. Then came Elizabeth Cook of Huntsville in 4th at 53:51, pressing Raper hard with only 29 seconds separating them. The battle for 5th through 8th was similarly tight: Karen Kelly (56:06), Cynthia Mitchell (57:31), Erin Stewart (57:34), and Gretchen Abbott (57:59) were all packed within a 1:53 window.

Mitchell's 6th-place finish in 57:31 deserves a separate mention — she also claimed 3rd in the Women's 5K at this same event. Racing competitively across two distances in one weekend is no small feat, and Mitchell delivered a podium finish in both.

The back half of the top 20 saw consistent sub-10:30 pacing, with Kiley Helton (10th, 58:47), Lili Kaiser (11th, 59:21), and Raquel Osmer (12th, 59:38) all coming home under the hour mark. Karen Moore, 64, finished 18th in 1:04:19 — one of the older competitors in the Masters Women field and still moving at a solid 10:21/mi pace across the 10K distance.
