Rocket City 10K — F55-59: Kelly Dominates in Huntsville

Karen Kelly made the F55-59 race her own from the gun. The Huntsville local crossed in 56:06 at a 9:02/mi clip — the only finisher in the group to break the hour mark, and by a margin that left no doubt. On a mild December morning in Huntsville, with temperatures sitting at 59°F and a light breeze, conditions were about as cooperative as a race day gets, and Kelly took full advantage.

Behind her, Lisa Hughey of Dalton, GA ran a composed 1:01:14 to claim second, while fellow Huntsville runner Missy Schulz rounded out the podium in 1:04:57. Tricia Houpt of Benton, AR was close on Schulz's heels in 4th at 1:06:12 — just 75 seconds back — making the chase pack the most competitive stretch of the race outside of Kelly's runaway lead.

The middle of the field produced the day's closest finish. Lynne Foster edged Tammy Bartley by nine seconds — 1:13:38 to 1:13:47 — for 8th and 9th respectively, both Athens-area runners making it a local duel. Stacy Brown (1:12:11) and Lisa Seufert (1:12:59) were tucked just ahead of them, meaning four athletes finished within 88 seconds of each other between 6th and 9th place.

At the back of the field, Lorna Dore of Charlotte finished 17th in 1:55:38, completing a group that stretched across nearly an hour of racing. Every one of the 17 women who toed the line in F55-59 got it done — from Kelly's sub-57 opener to Dore's nearly two-hour finish.
